Sri Devi Handlooms
Sridhar Rao, founder of Sri Devi Handlooms, is a skilled artisan from the heritage-rich town of Pochampally, has dedicated over two decades to the intricate art of Ikat weaving. Beginning his journey at the age of 21, Sridhar transitioned from farming to mastering this traditional craft.
Taking a bold departure from his family’s farming roots, Sridhar's passion and determination led him to become a torchbearer of Pochampally's weaving legacy. Today, he leads a team of 120 artisans, producing 1,000 to 2,000 meters of exquisite handwoven fabric each month. His team combines expertise in loom weaving and the natural dyeing of cotton yarns to create stunning sarees, dupattas, and fabrics.
Sridhar has been instrumental in introducing natural dyes and azo free dyes to the now synthetic-dyed Pochampally Ikat. While natural dyes faced initial skepticism due to concerns about color fastness, he has worked tirelessly to improve dyeing techniques, ensuring vibrant and durable hues. He sees natural dyes as living colors, likening their fading to the natural aging process—a perspective that reflects his deep respect for this eco-friendly art form.
In addition to his creative contributions, Sridhar collaborates with institutions like the National Institute of Rural Development and organizations such as Dastkar Andhra to promote design innovation and conduct workshops. His efforts have gained recognition, both domestically and internationally.
With plans to explore the intricate craft of double Ikat weaving, Sridhar Rao remains committed to preserving and innovating Pochampally's iconic textile tradition. His work embodies a blend of artistry, sustainability, and heritage, earning admiration from craft connoisseurs around the world.
